CYNTHIA GIRARD was born in Montréal, Canada, in 1969; she lives and works in Montréal. She studied art at the Université du Québec, Montréal (BA) and at Goldsmiths College, University of London (MA). Exhibitions include: Fictions sylvestres, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal(2005), Locked Up, Space London (2006),La secte de la souris volante, Oboro, Montréal (2007); Rien ne se perd, rien ne se crée, tout se transforme, La Triennale québécoise du Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal (2008); Cynthia’s Revels, September Berlin (2009), The Black Glove and the Peacock, Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina(2010) and Sweet Asbestos at former Meredith Keith Gallery, Toronto(2011). She is currently working on a new project that will be shown at Optica, Montreal( May 2012).
Cynthia Girard is also a writer, her most recent novel titled J’ai percé un trou dans ma tête was published in 2010.
Her work combines painting, installation and performance.

Germaine Koh : Artist Talk

Germaine Koh is a Canadian visual artist based in Vancouver. Her conceptually-generated work is concerned with the significance of everyday actions, familiar objects and common places. Her exhibition history includes the BALTIC Centre (Newcastle), De Appel (Amsterdam), Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Para/Site Art Space (Hong Kong), Frankfurter Kunstverein, Bloomberg SPACE (London), The Power Plant (Toronto), Seoul Museum of Art, Artspace (Sydney), The British Museum (London), the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), Plug In ICA (Winnipeg), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), and the Liverpool, Sydney and Montréal biennials. Koh was a recipient of the 2010 VIVA Award, and a finalist for the 2004 Sobey Art Award. Formerly an Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada, she is also an independent curator and partner in the independent record label weewerk. Koh is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver.

Rebecca Brewer Talk Wednesday Feb. 8 12:30-1:30 pm VA-323
Winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, Rebecca Brewer received her BFA at Emily Carr University and her MFA at Bard College . Brewer is interested in the depiction of the static figure outside of the idiom of portraiture, and has expored mystic subcultures and romantic constructions of nature in her felted sculptural work. Hailing from Vancouver, she is now divides her time between there and New York. Her work has been exhibited at Vancouver’s Equinox Gallery and UNIT/PITT Projects.

For the past two decades, Jin-me Yoon has been staging performative actions for the camera - often using her own body as a sign of difference and more recently, evidence of an embodied corporality - setting into associative motion the complexities of our current conditions of accelerated globalization. Her latest body of work in cities - Seoul, Beppu, Nagoya, Vancouver, Vienna, and Mexico City - further extends her interest in the interconnectedness of history, materiality and the mutable.(Submitted by: Jenna )
ARTIST TALK:Feb 16: 6PM- Learn more about how a work is acquired and how an artist gains museum recognition. Toronto artist Ed Pien and Gaëtane Verna, MAJ’s executive director and chief curator (2006-2012), will talk about the dynamics of the relationship between the artist and the museum. The talk also offers the opportunity to take a long look at the phantasmagorical work of this well-known artist. Presented by the Musée d’art de Joliette in collaboration with the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (MBAM), the discussion will take place at the MBAM (Auditorium Maxwell-Cummings, 1379, Sherbrooke St. West, Montréal) and will be conducted in English.
